Next Verse, As Good as the First

July 9, 2008

It’s so hard to do a good cover.  Celine Dion and Anastasia taught us all that lesson with their terrifying version of one of my all-time favorites, AC/DC’S “You Shook Me All Night Long.”  OMFG.  Sometimes the original and the cover need to die a death: see “You Light Up My Life.”  Die, die, die, Debby Boone, and take Leanne Rimes to lite rock hell with you.  But sometimes, just sometimes, both artists hit it out of the park.

Tailfeather reminded me of one such song this afternoon when she oh-so-kindly complimented me on the music I’ve posted here thus far.  If y’all liked Nirvana’s version of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” (and how could you not?), I cannot recommend Lead Belly’s  original highly enough.  Let’s take a listen, shall we?

That is some haunting blues right there.  Gives you chills, doesn’t it?  I have Nirvana’s version and Lead Belly’s original lined up back to back in my iPod, and I love them equally.  That’s the epitome of a good cover, in my book.
