If America Ceases to Be Good, America Will Cease to Be Great

October 2, 2008

This is a sentiment I believe in.  It’s one reason I’m a Democrat.  I think the Democratic party is out to do the most good for the most people.  I’m all about that, and I always will be.  This year’s presidential primary season was a difficult one for me, though, because I don’t think our party chose the best candidate.  I think Barack Obama will win the election, and I’m happy about that, but I think we had a chance to choose someone much more qualified and electable and effective and allowed that opportunity to slip through our fingers in a frenzy over all things shiny and new.  Sometimes I think I’ve moved past that (although I obviously haven’t), and the night I watched Obama’s acceptance speech at the convention was one of those times.  In that moment, I was especially proud to be a Democrat, because we are the party that wants good things – health insurance, job security, civil rights, and a free society – for our fellow citizens.  That’s the right side to be on. This just in from the No Shit Department: holder of 18 million votes and big-state/swing-state winner HRC would’ve been a better choice than credit card company BFF Joe Biden for Obama’s running mate.  Unfortunately there’s no revisiting that one, but in related news, HRC continues to pay her dues to the Dems on her own terms, campaigning for Obama without directly attacking Palin.  My girl’s no dummy, but sometimes I wonder about my party.

Oprah Viewers Will Cut a Bitch

Sarah Palin’s march to the [Atlantic] sea probably isn’t headed through Chicago, but one has to wonder whether Harpo studios will be a casualty nonetheless.

Alaska: #1 in Contraceptive Services?

September 5, 2008

NPR reported today on the state of sex education in Alaska.  You can listen to the interview after 7:00 p.m. EST tonight if you care to.  What I took away from it is that there is neither statewide sex education funding nor statewide sex education policy in Alaska.  Basically, it’s an each-school-district-for-itself policy (I could be wrong about that, and I do plan to listen to the interview again). Not a Dumb Choice After All?

September 5, 2008

Today, Sarah Palin is more popular than Barack Obama, John McCain, and Joe Biden.  Tomorrow is another day, though.

All My Rowdy Friends are Coming Over Tonight

September 4, 2008

37.2 million folks watched Palin’s acceptance speech (about 40 million people watched Obama).  I watched last night out of intense curiosity, but I think I will be watching the NFL game tonight instead of the RNC.  Whether I can be bothered to change the channel at halftime to catch McCain’s speech remains to be seen.  I just watched him do a walk-though flanked by his BFFs Lieberman and Lindsey Graham (catfight!), and that’s good enough for me.

Say What?

Let’s bury the word “shrill” for the next 61 days.  I didn’t like it then, and I don’t like it now.

Can I ask a serious question?  Why didn’t Barack Obama choose HRC to be on his ticket?  I didn’t think he would, but I’m a pessimist at heart.  I haven’t even thought much about it until tonight, but tonight I’m thinking about it a lot because I just watched a bunch of Republican women go apeshit over their female vice presidential nominee.  And I am happy for them in my own way.

So…why?  I Googled the official explanation, and I have to say: Answering “Why didn’t you think she was the right choice” with “She just wasn’t right choice” isn’t an answer.  Kthx.

I Watch the RNC So You Don’t Have To

Sarah Palin: Many things, but a bad public speaker is not one of them.  You ain’t got to lie, Craig, so I won’t: she hit a homerun.  McCain will not top it.  Now, onto the debates.

Wanna Get High?

Is this the bus we board for the high road?  Good, because I’ve got my ticket, and I’m ready to go.
